Qattara Depression (kätär`ə) or Munkhafad al-Qattarah (m
ngkhäfäd` äl-kät-tärä`), desert basin, c.7,000 sq mi (18,130 sq km), NW Egypt, NE Africa, in the Libyan Desert. It was long believed to be the lowest point (436 ft/133 m below sea level) in Africa, a record now claimed by Lake Assal, in Djibouti.Qattara Depression an arid basin in the Sahara, in NW Egypt, impassable to vehicles. Area: about 18 000 sq. km (7000 sq. miles). Lowest point: 133 m (435 ft.) below sea level Qattara Depression a waterless depression in the north Libyan Desert in Africa, in Egypt. Area, 19, 500 sq km. From the north and the west it is framed by limestone precipices with elevations as high as 100 m; near these precipices are the lowest sections of the bottom lands (133 m below sea level), occupied by salt marshes.
