qubit(QUantum BIT) A data bit in quantum computing. Such an entity can hold more than two values. See quantum computing. qubit [′kyü·bit] (computer science) In quantum computation, a superposition of the ground state and the excited state of an elementary two-level quantum system (such as a two-level atom or a nuclear spin), corresponding to a classical bit that is either 0 (corresponding to the ground state) or 1 (corresponding to the excited state). With such data, scientists may learn to use those boxed-up electrons as basic components, or qubits, of quantum computers--machines expected to exploit quantum physics to vastly outperform current computers in certain calculations (SN: 2/22/03, p. Josephson junctions are good candidates for a quantum computer with recent experiments demonstrating reasonably long coherence times, state preparation, manipulation and measurement, and coupling of qubits for even-tual gate operations. NEC and Japanese government-funded research group Riken said they had successfully created a state of quantum entanglement between two solid-state qubits for the first time. |
