in-memory database A database that keeps all active records in main memory rather than on disk. Accessing in-memory records is considerably faster than retrieving them from the disk, and complex decision support queries can be satisfied much more rapidly. Today's high-end computers can be configured with terabytes of main memory. In Time, It Will All Merge At some point in the future, perhaps 10 or 20 years from now, main memory and disk storage will merge into one "memory/storage" pool as all storage will eventually be solid state. Today's solid state disk drives are the onset of that paradigm. See future memory chips and solid state drive. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
