(formerly Rosetta), a city in the northern part of the Arab Republic of Egypt on the left bank of the Rashid River (a branch of the Nile), close to where the river empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Population, 36,700 (1966). Rashid, a port for the export of agricultural products, is linked by railroad and highway with Alexandria. The center of a rice-growing region, the city has rice-cleaning and other food-processing industries. There also is fishing industry.
