Rif (rĭf) or Rif Atlas, range of the Atlas Mts., NE Morocco, NW Africa, curving along the Mediterranean coast from Ceuta to Melilla. Tidighin (8,056 ft/2,455 m) is the highest peak. Composed of sedimentary rocks and uplifted during the Alpine orogeny, the range is a continuation of the Sierra Nevada Sierra Nevada , chief mountain range of S Spain, in Granada prov., running from east to west for c.60 mi (100 km), parallel to the Mediterranean Sea. The range's highest peak is Mulhacén (11,411 ft/3,478 m).

RifMuslim Berber people who live in El-Rif in northern Morocco. Their culture is based on cultivation, herding, and fish processing. They speak a dialect of Berber, but Arabic and Spanish are also widely used. They have traditionally flouted central-government control and have often instigated uprisings and attempted coups. Led by Abd el-Krim, they declared a short-lived independent republic, the Republic of the Rif (1921–26), which was quashed by a French-Spanish alliance. Rif (also Rifis), a Berber people that inhabit the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco. Population, more than 700,000 (1970 estimate). The Rifs speak a Berber language. The majority are bilingual and also speak Arabic. The Rifs are Sunni Muslims by religion. Their chief occupation is farming; wheat, corn, and other crops are grown. The Rifs waged a heroic struggle against Spanish and French colonialists for national liberation from 1921 to 1926. Rif a mountain chain in the Atlas Mountains, in northwestern Morocco. The Rif has a maximum elevation of 2,456 m. Composed chiefly of limestones, it is dissected by the canyons of numerous rivers. Maquis and forests of cork oak grow on the lower parts of the northern slopes; coniferous forests of arborvitae, juniper, and cedar occur at higher elevations.
