Raab, Julius

Born Nov. 29, 1891, in St. Pólten; died Jan. 8, 1964, in Vienna. Austrian state figure.

Raab graduated from the Technische Hochschule in Vienna in 1921. He was minister of trade and transportation in K. Schuschnigg’s government in 1938. After Austria was occupied by fascist Germany in 1938, he left the political scene. After the liberation of Austria in 1945, Raab participated in the founding of the Austrian People’s Party and served in the Provisional Government as secretary of state for building and reconstruction from April to December 1945. He was vice-chairman of the Austrian People’s Party from 1945 to 1951 and chairman of the party from 1951 to 1960. From 1953 to 1961 he was federal chancellor of Austria. In April 1955, Raab headed the government delegation during the negotiations with the Soviet government in Moscow. These negotiations led to an accord on the major questions connected with the signing of the State Treaty for the Reestablishment of an Independent and Democratic Austria.
