Račić, Josip

Born Mar. 22, 1885, in Horvati, near Zagreb; died June 20, 1908, in Paris. Croatian painter and graphic artist. One of the founders of the 20th-century Croatian school of painting.

Račić studied in Munich at the school of A. Ažbè and at the Academy of Arts (1905–08). His portraits and genre compositions were executed in a free technique marked by spontaneity and dramatic expressiveness. Račić employed a restrained palette, which was rich in tonal transitions. His paintings include Self-portrait, The Lady in Black (1907), and Mother and Child (1908). These three works are in the Modern Gallery in Zagreb. Račić also worked in watercolor and in charcoal and pencil.
