radar altimeter [′rā‚där al′tim·əd·ər]

A radio altimeter, useful at altitudes much greater than the 5000-foot (1500-meter) limit of frequency-modulated radio altimeters, in which simple pulse-type radar equipment is used to send a pulse straight down from an aircraft and to measure its total time of travel to the surface and back to the aircraft. Also known as high-altitude radio altimeter; pulse-type altimeter.
