(engineering)
A shield or wall of material interposed between a source of radiation and a radiation-sensitive body, such as a person, radiation-detection instrument, or photographic film, to protect the latter.

The development, coupled with new information about Syrian procurement of large amounts of graphite and a compound used as a radiation shield, could heighten concern about possible undeclared nuclear activity in Syria assisted by North Korea.
Their design of a lunar radiation shield with the ability to protect its inhabitants from radiation was reviewed by a panel of industry experts and chosen as one of 10 undergraduate abstract finalists in the Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) competition.
