radio access network The air interface and base station technology in a cellular network. In addition to the radio access network (RAN), the entire cellular system includes the core network, which provides the backbones and services, as well as the cellphones. The term RAN is used by GSM/UMTS systems; for example, GRAN (GSM RAN) and UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial RAN) are the GSM and UMTS radio access networks.
