Raff, Joseph Joachim (yō`zĕf yō`äkhĭm räf), 1822–82, Swiss-German composer and pianist, largely self-taught. He was a friend and follower of Liszt Liszt, Franz , 1811–86, Hungarian composer and pianist. Liszt was a revolutionary figure of romantic music and was acknowledged as the greatest pianist of his time. He made his debut at nine, going thereafter to Vienna to study with Czerny and Salieri.

, who produced his opera King Alfred at Weimar in 1851. A prolific composer, Raff achieved a position of eminence in Germany during his late years, but is chiefly remembered for the Lenore symphony (1872) and a few salon pieces.
