Cain (kān), in the Bible, eldest son of Adam and Eve, a tiller of the soil. In jealousy he killed his brother Abel and became a fugitive. Cain cast out from homeland for murdering Abel. [O.T.: Genesis 4:12] See : Banishment Cain cursed by God for murdering Abel. [O. T.: Genesis 4:11] See : Curse Cain jealous, slays Abel. [O.T.: Genesis 4:8] See : Murder Cain punished by God to life of vagrancy. [O.T.: Genesis 4:12] See : Wandering Cain according to the biblical myth, the oldest son of Adam and Eve, a farmer. Out of envy Cain killed his brother Abel, a “shepherd of sheep,” because Abel’s offerings were accepted by the god Yah-weh, whereas Cain’s were rejected. God cursed him for the murder of his brother and marked him with a special sign (the “mark of Cain”). The legend of Cain also entered Islam (Kabil and Khabil). In the myth about Cain’s murder of Abel many investigators see a mythologized reflection of the struggle between agricultural and livestock-raising ethnic groups. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
