Perlis (pûr`lĭs), state (1991 pop. 184,070), 310 sq mi (803 sq km), Malaysia, central Malay Peninsula, on the Andaman Sea. The smallest of the states of Malaysia, it is bordered on the N and E by Thailand and on the SE by Kedah, of which it formed a part till 1842. Kangar Kangar , town (1991 pop. 48,948), capital of Perlis state, Malaysia, central Malay Peninsula, on the Perlis River. It is a port and the center of a rice-growing region.

, its capital, is in the center of one of the richest rice-growing areas of Malaysia. Small quantities of tin are produced. The population is mostly Malay. In 1909 Siam transferred its suzerainty over Perlis to Great Britain. Perlis was one of the Unfederated Malay States before the creation (1948) of the Federation of Malaya. The official capital and by far the largest city is Kuala Lumpur; Putrajaya is the adminstrative capital.

a state of NW Peninsular Malaysia, on the Andaman Sea: a dependency of Thailand until 1909. Capital: Kangar. Pop.: 204 450 (2000). Area: 803 sq. km (310 sq. miles)

Perlis 

a state in Malaysia, located in the northwestern part of the Malay Peninsula and including the coastal islands. Area, 800 sq km. Population, 121,100 (1970). The administrative center is the city of Kangar.

Perlis is the least economically developed state in Malaysia. Jungles cover about three-fourths of its area, with the population concentrated along the coast. The economy is based on agriculture, and the main crop is rice, which is planted on three-fifths of the cultivated land; rubber-bearing plants, coconut palms, and other crops are also grown. There is also fishing, small-scale tin mining, and the primary processing of rubber.
