Akhmedov, Rakhim 

Born July 26, 1921, in Tashkent. Soviet painter. People’s artist of the Uzbek SSR (1962). Member of the CPSU since 1967. Chairman of the board of the Artists’ Union of the Uzbek SSR since 1965.

Akhmedov studied at the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in Leningrad from 1947 to 1953. He paints mostly genre portraits, striving to reveal man’s inner world and national character traits. His works include Little Shepherd (1951); a portrait of the kolkhoz field-team leader A. Tashtemirov and Mother’s Reflection, both painted in 1956 and housed in the Museum of Fine Arts of the Uzbek SSR in Tashkent; Woman from Surkhan-Dar’ia (1963); and portraits of artists L. Salim-dzhanova and B. Babev, both done in 1966. The last three are in the possession of the Board of Exhibitions of the Ministry of Culture of the Uzbek SSR. Akhmedov was awarded the Khamza State Prize of the Uzbek SSR in 1967 for a series of portraits of his contemporaries. He has also received the Badge of Honor.
