Ramah (rā`mə), in the Bible.

1 Town, NE ancient Palestine, allotted to Naphtali.

2 Town of Asher.

3 Unidentified town of Simeon, called Ramah of the south. It is apparently intended by the Ramoth in First Samuel, by the Baal in First Chronicles, and by Baalath-beer in Joshua.

4 Town of ancient Palestine, on the border between Judah and Israel. Ramah is the traditional burial place of Rachel. The Rama in the Gospel of St. Matthew is possibly the Ramah of Samuel: see Ramathaim-zophim Ramathaim-zophim , in the Bible, birthplace of Samuel, usually called Ramah and later Ramathaim. It has been variously identified with Ramah (4,) with Arimathaea, and with the modern Ramallah and Ramla. The land of Zuph is connected with the name.

5 Same as Ramoth-gilead Ramoth-gilead or Ramoth in Gilead, city of ancient Palestine, E of the Jordan. It is named in the Bible as a place of refuge and as Ahab's last battlefield. It also appears as Ramah.

We passed Ramah, and Beroth, and on the right saw the tomb of the prophet Samuel, perched high upon a commanding eminence.
In Ramah there was a voice heard,--weeping, and lamentation, and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted.
