Rambert, Marie 

(real name Myriam Ramberg). Born Feb. 20, 1888, in Warsaw. English ballet dancer and theatrical figure.

Rambert studied in Hellerau at the E. Jaques Dalcroze Institute from 1910 to 1912. In 1911 she performed with other students from this school in St. Petersburg and Moscow. From 1917 to 1923 she studied in Paris and London with E. Cecchetti and S. A. Astaf ‘eva.

In 1920, Rambert opened a ballet school in London. In 1930 she organized the first permanent English ballet company, which became known as the Ballet Rambert in 1934. The performances of this company were of great importance in the establishment of a national English ballet. In her work, Rambert enlisted the talents of English composers and artists and contributed to the artistic training of such leading English choreographers as F. Ashton, A. Tudor, and A. Howard. Her students included P. Argyle, D. Gould, and M. Lloyd. Rambert’s autobiography, Mercury, was published in 1972.
