Rampur

Rampur (rämpr`), city and former princely state, 893 sq mi (2,313 sq km), N central India. In 1949 the state was merged with Uttar Pradesh state.

Rampur, city (1991 pop. 243,742), formerly the capital of Rampur state and now a district administrative center, has various industries, including sugar refining and cotton milling. Its library has more than 12,000 rare manuscripts and a fine collection of Mughal miniature paintings.

Rampur 

a city in India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, on the Kosi River. Population, 161,800 (1971). It is the commercial center of an agricultural region in the upper Ganges valley. The city has sugar-refining, cotton-manufacturing, and metalworking industries; its chemical industry manufactures industrial alcohol and other products.
