In west-central NC, south of Greensboro; organized 1779 (prior to statehood) from Guilford County. Name Origin: For Peyton Randolph (1721?-75), member of the VA House of Burgesses (1748-49; 1752-75) and speaker (1766-75); president of the Continental Congress (1774-75).
