Ranney, (Joseph) Austin (1920– ) political scientist; born in Courtland, N.Y. He taught at Yale (1945–47) and the University of Illinois (1946–63) before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin: Madison (1963). He is best known for his analysis of the impact of reform movements on political parties.
