Name Origin: For Fort Ransom, built in 1867 and named for Gen. Thomas E.G. Ransom (1834-64), a Union officer from IL. Area (sq mi): 864.13 (land 862.75; water 1.38). Pop per sq mi: 6.70. Pop 2005: 5,810. State rank: 21. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.40%; 1990-2000 -0.50%. Pop 2000: 5,890 (White 97.60%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 40.70. Income 2000: per capita $18,219; median household $37,672; Pop below poverty level: 8.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,693-$27,485.
