Ransome, F. L.

Ransome, F. L. (Frederick Leslie) (1868–1935) geologist; born in Greenwich, England. He emigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1870. After teaching geology at Harvard (1986–97), he joined the U.S. Geological Survey (1897–1923) where he made field investigations of western U.S. metal mining. He joined the University of Arizona (1923–27), then taught part-time at the California Institute of Technology (1928–35). He made major contributions to studies of water and dam management and the importance of foreknowledge of geological faults in mining projects.
