Bianchi-Bandinelli, Ranucco
Born Feb. 19, 1900, in Siena. Italian archaeologist, art historian, and public figure. Member of the Italian Communist Party since 1944 and of its Central Committee since 1956. Participant in the resistance movement in World War II. From 1945 to 1947 Bianchi-Bandinelli was general director of antiquities and fine arts of the Ministry of Public Education of Italy. He became a professor at the University of Rome in 1956 and is director of the Gramsci Institute in Rome. Bianchi-Bandinelli has been a member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1947 and a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1958. His researches are devoted to problems of Etruscan, ancient Greek, ancient Italian, and Roman culture and art as well as to the Marxist theory of art.
