In central LA; organized 1807 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: French for the 'rapids,' on the Red River, which runs through the parish.

Area (sq mi): 1361.96 (land 1322.54; water 39.42). Pop per sq mi: 97.10.
Pop 2005: 128,462. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 -4.00%. Pop 2000: 126,337 (White 65.70%; Black or African American 30.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.90%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 35.50.
Income 2000: per capita $16,088; median household $29,856; Pop below poverty level: 20.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,627-$26,934.
