In north-central VA, west of Arlington; organized Feb 8, 1833 from Culpeper County (not to be confused with Old Rappahannock County, with county seat at Lancaster, organized 1656 from Lancaster County and abolished 1692). Name Origin: For the Rappahannock River.

Area (sq mi): 266.83 (land 266.57; water 0.26). Pop per sq mi: 27.30.
Pop 2005: 7,271. State rank: 120. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.10%; 1990-2000 5.50%. Pop 2000: 6,983 (White 91.80%; Black or African American 5.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.30%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 42.60.
Income 2000: per capita $23,863; median household $45,943; Pop below poverty level: 7.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $27,459-$30,423.
Unemployment 2004: 2.50%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 38.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 56.70%.
