Rauma (rou`mä), Swed. Raumo, city (1996 pop. 37,914), Western Finland prov., SW Finland, on the Gulf of Bothnia. It is Finland's leading western port and has wood, paper, chemical, leather, munitions, and lace and embroidery industries. In the late 19th cent. it had one of the largest sailing fleets in Finland. Rauma was a medieval trade center, chartered c.1445. Its 15th-century Franciscan church and the old city hall (1776), now a museum, are outstanding landmarks. How to thank TFD for its existence? For LWC paper, UPM Rauma mill's PM 4 in Finland set a new world speed record of 1912 m/min (6273 ft/min) in a 24-hour run that began on January 2, 2006. ``The cognac was a disappointment,'' said Markku Kankaristo, who spoke by telephone from the dive site near Rauma, Finland, about 155 miles northwest of Helsinki. UPM's Pietarsaari pulp mill and Rauma paper mill in Finland as well as the German Nordland Papier paper mill have also received FSC chain of custody certificates. |
