Ravi (rä`vē), one of the five rivers of the Punjab, 475 mi (764 km) long, rising in the Himalayas, NW India, and flowing generally W into Pakistan, past Lahore, to join the Chenab River, NE Pakistan. Its waters are used extensively for irrigation and were contested by India and Pakistan until 1960, when a treaty on the use of the Indus River waters was signed.
Ravi

a river in India and Pakistan, a left tributary of the Chenab (Indus River basin). The Ravi measures 725 km long. It originates on the southeastern spurs of the Pir Panjal mountain range, and its upper course flows through a deep valley. Farther down the river breaks through the Dhaoladhar Range and flows through the Punjab to its mouth. There is high water during the summer monsoon season.

The Ravi is widely used for irrigation, which takes up about one-third of the summer flow. Water from the river flows through many irrigation canals and is regulated by dams. The city of Lahore (Pakistan) is located on the Ravi.

One of the young men of fashion - he who was found dead at the bottom of a well on the night of the earthquake had once given him a complete suit of Hindu kit, the costume of a lowcaste street boy, and Kim stored it in a secret place under some baulks in Nila Ram's timber-yard, beyond the Punjab High Court, where the fragrant deodar logs lie seasoning after they have driven down the Ravi.
