Ravich, Iosif Ippolitovich
(real surname, Girshovich Moisha). Born Apr. 4 (16), 1822, in Slutsk; died Sept. 9 (21), 1875, in St. Petersburg. Russian scientist in the field of veterinary medicine, one of the organizers of veterinary education in Russia. Professor (1867). Ravich graduated from the veterinary department of the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy in 1850. At the academy, beginning in 1859, he taught the histology, physiology, general pathology, and pathological anatomy of animals, as well as epizootiology. In his later works, which were devoted to the infectious pathology of farm animals, he came close to understanding the principle behind the transmission of infections. In 1871 he became head of the journal Arkhiv veterinarnykh nauk, which was inaugurated at his initiative. WORKSObshchaia zoopatologiia ili sovremennoe uchenie o bolezniakh domashnikh zhivotnykh.
