Razumovskii, Vasilii Ivanovich 

Born Mar. 27 (Apr. 8), 1857, in Nikolaev District, Samara Province, now Ul’ianovsk Oblast; died Apr. 7, 1935, in Essentuki. Soviet surgeon; doctor of medicine (1884). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1934) and Hero of Labor (1923).

In 1880, Razumovskii graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Kazan, where he became a professor in 1887. In 1909 he helped found the University of Saratov and was named its rector; he was removed from this post in 1912 for refusal to carry out the reactionary policies of the minister of education, L. A. Kasso. During World War I he was a military surgeon. Razumovskii helped found universities in Tbilisi (1918) and Baku (1920). Beginning in 1920, he was a professor at the University of Saratov. At the beginning of the 20th century, Razumovskii performed operations on the central nervous system of patients with cortical epilepsy, the first such operations in Russia. He worked out a method of alcoholization of tissues and used it during operations on nerve trunks, brain matter, and varicose veins. He also developed original methods of osteoplastic amputation of the foot and other parts of the body.
