Read, Jacob (1752–1816) U.S. senator; born in Christ Church, S.C. After serving in the Continental Congress (S.C., 1783–85), he served in the U.S. Senate (Federalist, 1795–1801). He was one of the so-called "midnight judges," appointed by President John Adams as he left office; following the repeal of the act and the Marbury v. Madison case, Read never actually served.
