read receipt

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
read receipt
A response from an e-mail recipient that indicates the message was opened. The read receipt has to be requested by the sender, and the recipient may or may not comply. Although it is called a "read" receipt," there is no guarantee the person actually read any of the text. The message could have been opened and immediately trashed. E-mail client programs such as Outlook and Eudora support read receipt requests and responses, while Web-based e-mail does not. For automatic read receipts, see e-mail tracker.

It was just a computer glitch -- a "junk mail filter and read receipt setting error" to be exact.
The top five pet peeves were: Use of text speak such as LOL and BTW ( 22 per cent) Mass distribution emails to five or more recipients ( 16 per cent) Use of ' shouting' CAPITAL letters ( 15 per cent) No entry in the subject line ( 12 per cent) Read receipts (10per cent) With 10.
In sum, printed copies of e-mail, traditional e-mail read receipts and e-mail archives are inadequate in defending against legal challenges involving delivery, time, or content of business e-mail and are easily dismissed once questioned.
