Real-Time Transport Protocol

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.02 sec.
(protocol)Real-Time Transport Protocol - (RTP) An Internet protocol for transmitting real-time data such as audio and video. RTP itself does not guarantee real-time delivery of data, but it does provide mechanisms for the sending and receiving applications to support streaming data. Typically, RTP runs on top of the UDP protocol, although the specification is general enough to support other transport protocols.

RTP has received wide industry support. Netscape intends to base its LiveMedia technology on RTP, and Microsoft claims that its NetMeeting product supports RTP.

The most popular security protocol used with VoIP is the Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol (SRTP).
In essence, SIP on a VoIP network gives organizations a backbone to deploy virtual private networks (VPNs), virtual LANs (VLANs), access lists, authentication, transport layer security (TLS) and secure real-time transport protocol (SRTP) mechanisms from the network to their IP communications systems application server, gateway, data servers and phone devices.
Additionally, some firewalls are able to transcode unencrypted SIP and real-time transport protocol (RTP) packets, translating them into transparent LAN service (TLS) and station RTP (SRTP) packets.
