In an actual drive, the recording head is mounted on a movable actuator and its position is constantly being monitored and corrected to compensate for lateral tape motion.
To store a bit of data, a recording head magnetizes a tiny nickel rod with its north pole pointing up.
Future generations of recording head technology are being developed by the thin film magnetic head industry to achieve continued advances in areal density by using specialized materials, optimized film properties and tightly controlled film interfaces.
