On the northeastern border of TX, west of Texarkana; original county; organized 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For the Red River, which forms its northern border.

Pop 2005: 13,575. State rank: 147. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.20%; 1990-2000 0.00%. Pop 2000: 14,314 (White 75.90%; Black or African American 17.80%; Hispanic or Latino 4.70%; Asian 0.10%; Other 4.10%). Foreign born: 2.50%. Median age: 40.40.
