In west-central LA, southeast of Shreveport; organized 1871 from Caddo, Bossier, Bienville, Natchitoches, and De Soto parishes. Name Origin: For the river, which runs through the county.

Area (sq mi): 402.08 (land 389.29; water 12.79). Pop per sq mi: 24.30.
Pop 2005: 9,465. State rank: 62. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.60%; 1990-2000 2.50%. Pop 2000: 9,622 (White 57.60%; Black or African American 40.90%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 0.40%. Median age: 34.60.
Income 2000: per capita $12,119; median household $23,153; Pop below poverty level: 29.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $16,393-$18,618.
