Red Rock Canyon State Park

Location: 25 miles northeast of Mojave on Highway 14, near Cantil.
Facilities: 50 primitive campsites (é) with potable water and pit toilets, picnic areas, hiking trails, nature trails, visitor center (é), restrooms (é).
Activities: Camping, hiking, interpretive programs.
Special Features: Park features scenic desert cliffs, buttes, and colorful rock formations that were a landmark and watering hole for 19th-century stagecoaches and freight wagons. Significant paleontologic sites, the remains of an 1890s mining operation, and many arid-adapted plants and animals are protected here. Park also has been the site for a number of movies.

Location: 1 mile south of Hinton on US 281.
Facilities: 52 semi-modern campsites, 32 primitive campsites, group camp, showers, picnic area, 5 group shelters, trails, swimming pool, historical landmark, snack bar, fishing pond, playground (é).
Activities: Camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, volleyball.
Special Features: The soft, deep red sandstone of Red Rock Canyon was formed 200 million years ago during the Permian era. Cheyenne Indians, who once roamed the area, used the canyons in winter as a refuge against the cold north wind. During the mid-1800s, the canyon was a favorite stop for wagon trains traveling from Arkansas to California. Today, the canyon floor supports an unusually wide variety of foliage, including sugar maples, trees not normally found this far west.
