Redfield, Alfred Clarence (1890–1983) oceanographer; born in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a professor at Harvard (1921–57), and concurrently a researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1930–56). He made major contributions to studies of marine ecology, salt marshes, and tides.
