Reed, Luman (1787–1836) businessman, art patron; born in Austerlitz, N.Y. His family moved to Coxsackie, N.Y. (c. 1789), and he was schooled locally and worked in his father's store. He was a trader on the Hudson River, then joined a New York City grocery business. By 1815 he was a wealthy merchant. He subsidized and encouraged such artists as Asher B. Durand, Thomas Cole and William Sidney Mount. Upon his death his collection was donated to the New-York Historical Society.
