Refrigerator Ship

a cargo vessel (maritime, river, or lake) used in shipping perishable food products. A refrigerator ship is equipped with refrigeration equipment that makes it possible to adjust the temperature in the holds. High-temperature refrigerator ships are suited primarily for transporting cooled products, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, and lightly salted and cooled fish; low-temperature refrigerator ships carry frozen fish, meat, poultry, and butter. Refrigerator ships with general-purpose holds can carry either frozen or cooled products. Fishing ships equipped for the partial or complete processing of fish, mollusks, and other marine organisms are also classified as refrigerator ships.
