In western TX, southwest of Odessa; established Apr 14, 1883 from Pecos County. Name Origin: For Col. George R. Reeves (1826-82), TX legislator (1855-61), Confederate army officer, and Speaker of the House (1881-82).

Area (sq mi): 2641.95 (land 2635.88; water 6.07). Pop per sq mi: 4.40.
Pop 2005: 11,638. State rank: 158. Pop change: 2000-20005 -11.40%; 1990-2000 -17.10%. Pop 2000: 13,137 (White 23.80%; Black or African American 2.10%; Hispanic or Latino 73.40%; Asian 0.40%; Other 18.20%). Foreign born: 14.70%. Median age: 32.10.
Income 2000: per capita $10,811; median household $23,306; Pop below poverty level: 28.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,832-$16,372.
