reference electrode [′ref·rəns i′lek‚trōd]
(physical chemistry)
A nonpolarizable electrode that generates highly reproducible potentials; used for pH measurements and polarographic analyses; examples are the calomel electrode, silver-silver chloride electrode, and mercury pool.
