These combined traditional reflector telescopes, which use mirrors to focus the light from stars, with the quality and portability of refractor telescopes, which use refracting lenses, much like eyeglasses. Couched in the Solstice Peak Observatory, which he built himself, high in the Santa Monica mountains, he spends hours gazing into space through a ten-inch f/8 Newtonian reflector telescope and sketching what he sees. For comparison, the left image depicts the same region as it was photographed from the ground by Eric Persson of the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, using the 100-inch DuPont reflector telescope. |
