MacCulloch uses the term "Counter-Reformation" to refer in general to Roman Catholicism, rather than tailoring his terminology to the particular subject matter at hand (early modern Catholicism, Catholic Reformation, Catholic Reform). Since the Protestant Reformation, Catholic spirituality has been dominated by prayer involving words and formulas, obscuring the contemplative tradition evident in figures such as Gregory of Nyssa, John Cassian, Bernard of Clairvaux, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux. By the time of the Reformation, Catholics held that what we now call the eucharistic prayer is a reenactment of Christ's self-sacrifice on the cross. |
