refractive index |
Also found in: Medical, Wikipedia, Hutchinson | 0.04 sec. |
refractive indexA property of a material that changes the speed of light, computed as the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light through the material. When light travels at an angle between two different materials, their refractive indices determine the angle of transmission (refraction) of the light beam. In general, the refractive index varies based on the frequency of the light as well, thus different colors of light travel at different speeds. High intensities also can change the refractive index.

| the two-colored Astra lamps are molded with a polymethylmethacrylate material; in one area of the lens small polymer particles with a different refraction index are injected into the base material so that the area appears to be frosted glass; this is said to be the first such application of the material in a mass produced vehicle); vacuum metalizing the reflectors, and assembling the products. 2] = refraction index of crystal (1) and sample (2). The refraction index must be accurate to six significant figures, Westphal says. |
