refractive index |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Wikipedia, Hutchinson | 0.02 sec. |
refractive indexA property of a material that changes the speed of light, computed as the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light through the material. When light travels at an angle between two different materials, their refractive indices determine the angle of transmission (refraction) of the light beam. In general, the refractive index varies based on the frequency of the light as well, thus different colors of light travel at different speeds. High intensities also can change the refractive index.

| The laser channel does not assume sphericity and is not subject to effects of optical and physical properties of particles or medium (such as refractive indices, absorption, surface texture, porosity, electrical conductivity, viscosity variations, Brownian motion or thermal convection). His classical synthesis of the bulky, thermosetting dimethacrylate, Bis-GMA, 2,2-bis[p(2'-hydroxy-3'-methacryloxypropoxyphenyl)]-propane, his preparation of silica fillers that combined translucency and radiopacity while matching the refractive indices of the resin matrix, and his utilization of the technology of silane coupling agents, ushered in the modern era of esthetic dental composites [11,12]. Using PLM to interpret the morphology and refractive indices of these materials can provide another piece of information for the researcher wishing to evaluate an object's authenticity. |
