Rehnquist, William H. (Hubbs) (1924– ) Supreme Court chief justice; born in Milwaukee, Wis. As assistant attorney general in the Nixon administration (1969–71), he promoted a conservative anticrime position and opposed civil rights measures. President Nixon named him to the U.S. Supreme Court despite opposition from liberal members of Congress.
