kingdom of God |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.06 sec. |
kingdom of Godor kingdom of heavenIn Christianity, the spiritual realm over which God reigns as king, or the eventual fulfillment of God's will on earth. Although rare in pre-Christian Jewish literature, the idea of God as king was fundamental to Judaism, and Jewish ideas on the kingdom of God most likely shaped New Testament usage. The term is often used in the New Testament, and it was a central theme in the preaching of John the Baptist and Jesus. Theologians differ as to whether Jesus implied that the kingdom had arrived in his person or whether it was expected as a future event. Christian orthodoxy now holds that the kingdom has been partially realized by the presence of the church in the world and that it will be fully realized after the Last Judgment. In places of terror and suffering, where is the reign of God creeping in and transforming the hearts and minds of people? Others are practical, touching on human issues such as parenting and sexuality, and some are missional, exploring social justice, oppression, and poverty in ways that inform what it might look like to see the reign of God on earth as it is in heaven. There is much we can achieve together in building the reign of God, but it will require us to see that God's larger purposes transcend our internal differences. |
