Reinhold, Meyer (1909– ) classicist, historian; born in New York City. After retiring as professor of classical studies from the University of Missouri, he became professor of classical studies at Boston University (1983). He was the founder of the International Society for the Classical Tradition (1991), editor of the Annual Bibliography of the Classical Tradition (1980), and coeditor, with Wolfgang Haase, of the projected seven-volume Classical Tradition and the Americas (1992). His Roman Civilization: Selected Readings (3rd edition, 1990), an anthology of source material in translation done with Napthali Lewis, introduced generations of students to Roman history. His extensive publications have ranged over all aspects of Greek and Roman history and civilization, but he is best known for his pioneering and comprehensive work on the classical tradition in America.
