Réjane, Gabrielle

(real name, Charlotte Réju). Born June 6, 1856, in Paris; died there June 14, 1920. French actress.

Réjane graduated from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Paris in 1875 and subsequently made her stage debut. From 1906 she managed the Réjane Theater and acted there until her death.

Réjane’s creative work reflected the realism of the works of dramatists who were her contemporaries. The images she created were characterized by humanity and refined grace. Her roles included Nora in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Clotilde in Becque’s La Parisienne, and Germinie in the Goncourt brothers’ Germinie Lacerteux.

Réjane toured many countries in Europe in 1867, 1899, 1901, and 1910, when she visited Russia; she also toured South America and North America.
