Rejt, Benedikt

(also Beneš Rejt or Rejt from Pistov). Born 1451; died 1534. Bohemian architect.

Rejt took part in the reconstruction of the Pražský Hrad (the historical nucleus of Prague). His structures in the Hrad include Vladislav Hall (1490–1500), the Cavalry Staircase (c. 1500), and the Daliborka and Mihulka towers. Rejt also was the architect of St. Barbara’s Cathedral in Kutná Hora (from 1512) and the Church of St. Mikuláše in Louny (from 1520). The system of “petaloid” arches created by Rejt reflects the decorative tendencies of the Late Gothic. Sometimes the intricate network of ribs concealed the structural framework of the roof.
