Rem Ivanovich Soloukhin

Soloukhin, Rem Ivanovich 

Born Nov. 19,1930, in Gus-Khrustal’nyi. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1962.

Soloukhin graduated from Moscow State University in 1953. From 1953 to 1958 he worked at the Power Engineering Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and from 1959 to 1967, at the Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1967 to 1971 he was deputy director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1971 he became director of the Siberian Division’s Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Soloukhin became a professor at the University of Novosibirsk in 1965.

Soloukhin has done research on the combustion of gases and the kinetics of high-temperature chemical reactions in shock waves. He has investigated the structure of detonation waves in gases, processes by which combustion is transformed into detonation, and the propagation of shock waves in inhomogeneous media (in connection with the problem of shielding from shock waves). He has also developed methods for producing inverse media during rapid gas flow and has proposed techniques for measuring rapidly varying pressures, densities, temperatures, and other parameters of processes in shock waves.

Soloukhin has received the Lenin Prize (1965), two orders, and a number of medals.
